Mary C. Gallo
Following nearly 28 years as President and CEO of
the Wine Institute, during which time he directed U.S.
and international public policy objectives for
California's wineries and winegrowers, John De Luca was
Executive Vice Chairman for the Wine Institute from
2003 to 2008. His duties included advisory, liaison,
educational, and special assignments for the California
wine industry.
Dr. De Luca was appointed Senior Advisor to the
President of the University of California for
Agriculture and Business in 2002 and reappointed in
2007 by President Mark Yudof. He currently serves as a
Distinguished Visiting Scholar and member of the Board
of Advisors at the Goldman School of Public Policy at
UC Berkeley, as well as on the Council of the Friends
of the Bancroft Library. He serves on the Board of
Directors of the Institute for Teaching, founded by the
California Teachers Association, and the Board of
Directors of the Bay Area Council. He remains Founder
and Co-Chairman of the Agriculture-High Technology
Alliance, Founding Chairman of the University of
California's President's Advisory Commission on
Agriculture and Natural Resources, and Founding Member
of the Director's Council, Shorenstein Center, John F.
Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University. He
also serves as Senior Advisor to the board of the E.
& J. Gallo Winery. At the federal level, Dr. De
Luca served two terms on the Agriculture Policy
Advisory Committee (APAC) and on the Export-Import Bank
Advisory Committee.
In recent years, Dr. De Luca has received numerous
awards including Agriculturist of the Year for the
State of California in 2001, the prestigious
Presidential Citation conferred by President Richard
Atkinson of the University Of California in 2003, and
Senate and Assembly bipartisan Resolutions of
Commendation in 2003. He is the recipient of the
Distinguished Service Award by the Wine Spectator,
Lifetime Achievement Award by the Wine Enthusiast, and
Torch of Liberty Award by the Anti-Defamation League.
In 2007, the ten campus Alumni Associations of the
University of California honored him with the AAUC
Advocate of the Year Award.
From 1968 to 1975, Dr. De Luca served as Deputy
Mayor of San Francisco under Mayor Joseph Alioto. In
1965-1966, he served as White House Fellow in the
administration of President Lyndon B. Johnson. On the
White House staff, he worked on national security
matters and served on various state department
coordinating committees. In 1966-1967, John was special
assistant to Senator Frank Church of Idaho, who was
responsible for international issues.
From 1956 to 1960, he held a Ford Foundation Grant
(Harvard) and a Fulbright Fellowship (University of
Rome). In Moscow in the summer of 1959, Dr. De Luca was
present at the famous “Kitchen Debate” between
Nikita Khrushchev and Richard Nixon. In 1964-1965, he
was a member of the faculty at San Francisco State
University, teaching courses in American foreign policy
and international relations.
Dr. De Luca received a BA in Political Science from
UCLA in 1955, an MA in Soviet Studies from Harvard
University in 1958, and a PhD in International
Relations from UCLA in 1967.
Dr. De Luca resides in Redwood City, California,
with his wife Josephine. He has two daughters, Gina
Raven and Carla Worfolk, a son, Perry De Luca,
sons-in-law John Raven and Patrick Worfolk, and three
grandchildren, Jeremy and Julia Raven, and Sofia
Worfolk.
Joseph E. Gallo
Joseph E. Gallo is President and Chief Executive
Officer of the E. & J. Gallo Winery, the world’s
largest family-owned winery. The company has a
significant presence in the California wine, brandy,
and distilled spirits industries, with seven wineries
and more than 60 brands including table and sparkling
wines, dessert wines, and distilled spirits.
As President and CEO, Mr. Gallo has focused much of
his energy on growing the company and has overseen a
number of acquisitions including Barefoot, Louis M.
Martini, Mirassou Vineyards, and William Hill Estate.
He has also directed the expansion of the company’s
imports portfolio, with entries from nine different
countries, as well as the introduction of New Amsterdam
Gin.
Mr. Gallo joined the winery’s sales department in
1965 and was instrumental in the company gaining
national distribution by 1970, applying lessons learned
from working alongside his father, Ernest Gallo, and
his uncle, Julio Gallo. Prior to becoming CEO in 2001,
he focused most of his efforts on the company’s
expansion into international markets, overseeing sales,
distribution, marketing, and operations. Today, Gallo
International has various regional headquarters around
the world.
In the United States, Mr. Gallo has served on the
Board of Directors for the Wine Institute of California
since 1972, and the Grocery Manufacturers Association
since 2001. He has served on the Stanford University
Graduate School of Business Advisory Council since
1995. Stanford University recognized Mr. Gallo with
the Stanford Associates Achievement Award.
Joseph Gallo was born in Modesto, California on
March 12, 1941, to Ernest and Amelia Gallo. He spent
his youth working in the family business, graduated
from the University of Notre Dame in 1962, and earned
his MBA from the Stanford Business School in 1964. He
and his wife, Ofelia, are the parents of three
children, Stephanie, Ernest, and Joseph, and have four
grandchildren.
Mr. Gallo and the Gallo family are committed to
helping grow wine consumption throughout the world and
contributing to the long-term success of the global
wine industry. The Gallo family considers family
ownership its greatest asset and believes that the
benefits of private ownership enable long-term business
sustainability through investment back into physical
assets, brand building, vineyard research, and
continued long-term relationships with winery
employees, growers, distributors, retailers, and
customers.
Mary C. Gallo
Mary Gallo is the widow of David E. Gallo, who was
involved in the Gallo Center from its inception. She
has always had a great interest in the philosophy and
purpose of the Center.
Mary Gallo is a member of the Gallo Winery Advisory
Board and serves on various charitable foundation
boards. She also oversees the management of her
parents’ ranches. She graduated from Modesto Junior
College in 1964.
